Coaching

Build the breadth your next role requires.

You do not need to leave your functional expertise behind. You need to connect it to the customers, economics, decisions and people that determine how the whole business performs.

Octane Man coaching is for accomplished technical and functional leaders preparing for broader responsibility—or learning to carry it now.

Who this is for

You may be an engineering, product, finance, technology or operations leader who is:

  • Preparing for a general-management, commercial or enterprise role.
  • Newly responsible for a P&L, business unit or broader organization.
  • Expected to lead across functions you have never personally worked in.
  • Trying to understand customers, sales, pricing or go-to-market more deeply.
  • Learning to make investment decisions across competing priorities.
  • Looking for an experienced, independent operator with whom you can think out loud.

The goal is not to turn you into the head of every function. It is to help you understand how those functions connect, ask better questions and lead the business across them.

The hardest and most valuable work often happens at the intersections: where Engineering meets Product, Product meets Sales, customer value meets business economics, and shared responsibility can easily become unclear responsibility. Mark’s career success came in large part from learning to work effectively across those boundaries. That same cross-functional fluency is central to the coaching.

Ways to work together

Program 1: Preparing for the Next Role

Be ready before the opportunity arrives.

This focused program is for high-performing functional leaders who want to become credible candidates for broader business leadership.

We begin with the role you want and work backward. What will that role require you to understand? Where is your experience already strong? Which gaps could undermine your readiness or confidence?

Together, we build a practical development agenda around the capabilities that matter most.

Typical areas of work

  • Reading and understanding a P&L.
  • Connecting product and technical decisions to business economics.
  • Understanding customers, markets, pricing and go-to-market.
  • Thinking across functions rather than optimizing one function.
  • Communicating with senior executives and boards.
  • Building a credible narrative for your next role.
  • Identifying experiences you should pursue before making the move.
Format

A focused three-month engagement with weekly 45-minute sessions, practical work between calls and reasonable access between sessions for time-sensitive questions.

Outcome

A clearer view of the role, an honest assessment of readiness and a targeted plan for building the breadth to succeed.

Program 2: Stepping Into the Bigger Role

You got the role. Now the whole business is looking to you.

This program is for leaders who have recently taken on a larger mandate: a business unit, a P&L, a general-management position or an enterprise-level role.

The learning is not theoretical. Your actual business becomes the material: the P&L you inherited, the team you need to assess, the strategy you need to clarify, the customer decision you cannot avoid and the executive meeting coming next week.

Typical areas of work

  • Establishing priorities for the first months in the role.
  • Understanding the business model and economic drivers.
  • Assessing the organization without rushing to replace people.
  • Building effective relationships across Sales, Product, Finance and Operations.
  • Making decisions with incomplete information.
  • Translating strategy into operating priorities and accountability.
  • Communicating confidently with a CEO, executive team or board.
Format

A six-month engagement with weekly 45-minute sessions during the first three months, followed by two 45-minute sessions per month during the next three months. The engagement includes real-time application, work between calls and reasonable access between sessions when important situations arise.

Outcome

Faster learning, better decisions and greater confidence carrying responsibility for the whole business.

Executive Sounding Board

Experienced perspective when the decision matters.

Not every leader needs a structured program. Sometimes you need an independent operator who can understand the situation quickly, challenge your assumptions and help you reach a clearer decision.

The Executive Sounding Board is available on a limited basis for specific leadership, organizational, commercial or investment questions.

Format

A prepaid block of four 45-minute sessions, used for a specific leadership, organizational, commercial or investment question.

What working with Mark is like

Operator, not theorist. The patterns come from carrying a P&L and leading across functions.

Clarity before prescription.

We identify the real problem before jumping to a familiar solution.

Curiosity before judgment.

I will question your assumptions directly, without manufacturing conflict or performing certainty.

Action follows insight.

A useful conversation should change what you see, decide or do next.

FAQ

Is this coaching or consulting?

Primarily coaching—but informed by operating experience. I will help you think, question assumptions and build your own capability. When relevant, I may share patterns or explain how a business mechanism works. I will not take over your job or hand you a generic playbook.

Does my company need to sponsor the engagement?

No. Leaders may engage directly, and companies may sponsor an individual as part of leadership development or a role transition. When a company sponsors the work, we will agree at the outset on objectives, boundaries and confidentiality.

Do you only coach engineers?

No. “Technical” includes any leader whose expertise is deep and specialized. That may include engineering, product, finance, technology, operations or another function. The common challenge is learning to lead beyond that original discipline.

Is this remedial coaching?

No. The primary use case is developmental: an accomplished leader is preparing for broader responsibility or accelerating into it.

How is the engagement priced?

Every situation is different. Pricing begins with a conversation to understand the leader, the role, the sponsor context and the work required. I then provide a written proposal with a clear scope and engagement fee.

Where do sessions take place?

I work with leaders virtually worldwide. In-person sessions may be arranged when location and travel logistics make them practical.

What will your next role ask you to understand?

Let’s identify the breadth that will matter most—and build it deliberately.
